Istanbul Canal Project:
The canal connects the Black Sea to the north of Istanbul with the Sea of Marmara to the south and divides the European part of the city into two sections, making the eastern part of the European section an island between the continents of Asia and Europe. The canal is 30 kilometers long in a westward direction, with an estimated initial cost of approximately 15 billion dollars. The new canal allows ships to pass between the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea without passing through straits subject to the terms of the “Montreux” agreement, which stipulates freedom of navigation in the straits of the Black Sea, including the Bosphorus. The canal extends to connect the Black Sea in the north with the Sea of Marmara in the south, with a length of 45 kilometers and a depth of 25 meters. Its width is approximately 400 meters, reaching one kilometer at one point. The canal starts from Lake Kucukcekmece, a natural lake in the Sea of Marmara to the west of Istanbul, and extends north to the Sazlidere Dam, then the village of Sazlidere, reaching the Black Sea. The Turkish Ministry of Transport intends to build ten bridges as part of the canal project.
